For the past few weeks since Mayor Garcetti saw your petition and intervened to halt the painting of our mural, we have been in discussions with the City to try and come up with a solution that works for everyone. After reviewing more closely and exploring all possible options, it has been determined that the current mural needs to be painted over.
However, the Mayor’s Office has offered to give us a space in the city to create a NEW mural that can live for years to come. When we get back from tour, I am going to assemble a creative team of some of my favorite artists and friends in Los Angeles to collaborate on the design of the new mural. When it comes time to paint, I would love for all of you to get involved in putting this new work on the wall so we can all experience creating something together and truly embrace the rise of downtown Los Angeles as a community.
My only request is that you respect this process and quietly let them do what they need to do to return the building on 5th and Main to its original state. Everybody involved knows it’s not an easy situation and I would love it if our side would be graceful about this transition.
I’m excited to build something new. I want to thank you again for all your support. It’s been a beautiful thing to witness a unified voice realized. I’m looking forward to hearing that voice again when it’s time to invest our energy into a new work of art for the city. Bless.
