Foster The People

Fri August 1, 2014

For the past few weeks since Mayor Garcetti saw your petition and intervened to halt the painting of our mural, we have been in discussions with the City to try and come up with a solution that works for everyone. After reviewing more closely and exploring all possible options, it has been determined that the current mural needs to be painted over.

However, the Mayor’s Office has offered to give us a space in the city to create a NEW mural that can live for years to come. When we get back from tour, I am going to assemble a creative team of some of my favorite artists and friends in Los Angeles to collaborate on the design of the new mural. When it comes time to paint, I would love for all of you to get involved in putting this new work on the wall so we can all experience creating something together and truly embrace the rise of downtown Los Angeles as a community.

My only request is that you respect this process and quietly let them do what they need to do to return the building on 5th and Main to its original state. Everybody involved knows it’s not an easy situation and I would love it if our side would be graceful about this transition.

I’m excited to build something new. I want to thank you again for all your support. It’s been a beautiful thing to witness a unified voice realized. I’m looking forward to hearing that voice again when it’s time to invest our energy into a new work of art for the city. Bless.

The City of Los Angeles, Foster the People, and Capital Foresight have explored all the options for the mural at 539 S. Los Angeles Street. However, since the Santa Fe Lofts is a State Historic Building that receives tax credits for maintaining original design features under the Mills Act, it is necessary to remove the mural to return this historic property to its original state.

We all agree that public art is part of what makes L.A. great, so the Mayor’s Office, Foster the People, and Capital Foresight have committed to working together to create a new mural in another downtown location that all Angelenos can enjoy for many years.  Details of the mural will be revealed at a later date.

Tue July 15, 2014

Thank you to everyone who came down to the mural yesterday and all of you who signed the petition! You surprised everyone and saved this mural. Your overwhelming support has been inspiring. Thank you Mayor Eric Garcetti for listening and intervening on such short notice. Thank you Los Angeles Times for covering the story. Be sure to stop by and enjoy the mural if you are in Los Angeles: 539 S. Los Angeles St.

Supermodel Mural Update

Fri July 11, 2014

Our Supermodel mural must come down by Monday July 14th. This news has come as a surprise and disappointment to me and everyone else that collaborated on making this project happen. This mural was our contribution to the city of Los Angeles - our kiss of color to the city we love. The permits that we were told were approved, have retroactively been denied due to a number of issues involving the building and the city. Therefore, we wanted to let you know that it will be there for the next few days in case you haven’t seen it and want a chance to visit before it comes down.
Thank you for all your support. The show that we played in January under the mural was a landmark for me and my personal relationship with this city. Never did I think I would be involved in creating an art piece of this scale and magnitude. We feel truly honored to have been able to share it with you over the last year. Art brings to life things that can seemingly be dead, and can put a fresh perspective on things that are living. It’s so important we keep creating.
Soon a space that used to have art on it will be blank. We won’t be able to fill that exact space, but if we are conscious of what we are losing, we can be conscious of creating something in its place and continue to keep the creative world in balance.
Lastly, we are going to be filming the painting over of the mural. We will have a camera documenting YOUR THOUGHTS on July 14th from 8am to 7pm at the site of the mural and would love to speak with you about art, your history with Los Angeles, music, community, and anything else that you might have on your heart.
